Bharati Vidyapeeth’s College of Engineering for Women, has started National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of 50 volunteers in the year 2006-2007 under the guidance of Prof. S. T. Khot. Later with the overwhelming response of the students & staff the unit gradually increased under guidance of Prof. S. A. Itkarkar.The strength of NSS unit became 100 volunteers in the year 2010-11. With great innovative ideas & successful activities the unit was again strengthened by more 50 making total of 150 volunteers. Now the NSS unit has strength of 200 volunteers from 2016-17.

Prof S. A. Itkarkar and Dr. S. P. Kadam are the programme officers of the NSS unit. In this program the NSS Volunteers, under the guidance of the Principal & NSS Program Officer, carry out different activities like tree plantation, Shramdaan, blood donation camp, various competitions, lectures & seminars for students, visit to old age home & orphanages. The NSS volunteers also organize different events and celebrate days such as Independence Day, Engineer’s day, Women’s Day, etc

Academic Year: 2012-2013

Our college NSS unit with strength of 100 volunteers conducted many activities during the whole academic year & special camp held at Khopi with 50 volunteers. Various innovative activities were started in this year such as Kanya Ratna Abhiyan workshop, Tarunybhan workshop, Rakshabandhan with blind school students, rallies on My Earth My Duty, AIDS Day Awareness, Kanyaratna Wachava, Vyasanmukti, Changemakers abhiyaan, Bus Day, Police Mitra during Dindi stay & Ganeshotsav. NSS unit also continued this spirit in the special camp with lot more social projects like Health check-up camps, Dental & Eye Check up, Yogabhyas Shibir, Kalopasna, Computer Literacy, Child Health, Science Exhibition, Rain Water Harvesting Workshop were conducted with amazing response of villagers at Khopi village.

This year made a historic impact as we received the Best Changemakers Award organized by NSS SPPU - Pune Police - USK Foundation by the hands of well known personality Dr. Ujjwal Nikam. Prof. S.A. Itkarkar became the Area Co-ordinator of NSS. Also many volunteers participated in National Level Adventure camp, state level camps such as Utkarsh, Avhan, Adventure camp, University level workshops & also organized District level value Education workshop which included Women Activist Vidya Bal, National Judo champion Kavita Navande, Principal Dr. Jadhuvar sir.

Academic Year: 2013-14

In this year NSS Unit emerged stronger with 150 volunteers exploring many new ideas & achievements marking it as another great year in the history of BVCOEW. The NSS unit raised the flag higher as our first volunteer marched on the Republic Day at Rajpath of Maharashtra-SRD Parade held at Mumbai. With more active participation regular activities including another district level value education workshop with valuable guests Kavita navande, Bhagwan Mali, Chandrashekhar Murumkar, Supriya kothari guided college students.

Volunteers built reservoir (Bandhara), Drama & street play performanaces, Teaching School Students, cleaning of Village & Awareness programmes during special camp held at Lavale. Also our programme officer Prof. S.A. Itkarkar conducted the National level Adventure camp as team leader held at Himachal Pradesh for 10 days.

Academic Year: 2014-15

Another remarkable year added as the quality & quantity of activities was enhanced. Total 58 regular activities, just a preview to mention are Warkari Mitra(3 days), Shramdan at Maher foundation, Mutha River Cleaning Drive, Diary making, celebration of Rakshabandhan with NDRF officers, International Youth Week celebration with moto of HIV Awareness, huge participation in Police Mitra during Ganeshotsav, Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, Diwali celebration with cloth donation, street play performances on social issues, Shiv Jayanti Celebration at BVP Campus, Self defence workshop, writing paper of Blind students, trekking of forts etc.

The 7 days residential camp with 75 volunteers included Health Check up-Eye Check up, socio-cultural gathering, street plays on social issues, Seminars on Career guidance, Law & legal issues related to Women, Importance of advanced techniques in Agriculture, Government schemes, Kalavishkar programme, Science Exhibition for school students & Villagers held at Shriramnagar. Also this year 3 volunteers participated in National Integration camps & National Adventure camp, 3 volunteers in State level camps like Avhan, SRD Parade & 13 volunteers enrolled in different University level camps.

Academic Year: 2015-16

This year our Unit created the golden mark in the history of Savitribai Phule Pune University as we organized the First most University level 7 days Residential camp for only Girls in University adopted village Kondiwade with the moto “Swachha - Swastha Bharat Abhiyan” which was inaugurated in the honourable presence of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vasudeo Gade, which was again first time he visited any NSS Camp and many dignitaries of Village & college. With the remarkable response of the volunteers from university we conducted different activities such as self defence workshop, Awareness through Rally, Painting of School Walls with Introduction to Universe, celebrated new year eve with Bhajan-Kirtan and No school bags day on 1st January, Blood donation camp, Street play by University team, Science Exhibition , disaster management & Practicals of Mallakhamb, Celebration of Savitribai Phule Jayanti and many more.

Also with the successful conduction of 107 regular activities we made an huge social impact through activities like Warkari Mitra, Satranji Donation to Kondiwade Mandir, Gurupournima Celebration with Handmade Diaries,Tree Plantation, Animal Adoption ,International Yoga Day,Street plays-Nishabda, Kurukshetra, Plug-In -India, Anti-Tobacco campaigning, Mind & its control Workshop, Udaan Workshop, Rakshabandhan at oldage home, Engineer’s day, Peace Day, Police mitra, Pune Smart City Citizen, Swachha Mahavidyalay abhiyan, Dipotsav at Shatayu Bhavan, Road Safety Awareness Workshop in Munot Vidyalay, National youth day Celebration at Shaniwarwada, Makar Sakranti , Blood donation Camp, etc. This year we interviewed many noble personalities including Anna Hajare, Prajkta Mali, Mandar Karanjkar, our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, President Dr. Pranav Mukharjee, vice president Hon. Mr. Hameed Ansari and many more ; volunteers learnt from their valuable experiences.

For the first time Our volunteer represented India in the China during Youth Exchange Programme, marched on the Rajpath on Republic Day, represented our SPPU in State level Prerna Camp, and honoured with many awards from university District level Best Volunteer, SRD Parade participation, Avhan’s Best Volunteer from almost 1500 Volunteers, Best leader-best volunteer from various university level camps etc.

Academic Year: 2016-17

With mesmerizing journey of NSS unit, this year also volunteers continued the same spirit with more emphasis on current social issues & focussing the need of society which lefts the memorable stamps in the history. The Organ Donation awareness campaign, Art & craft exhibition on Youth day, Rangoli competition on Organ Donation, campus Decoration at SPPU-Painiting of trees, Meditation program-Heartfulness workshop, Happy streets activity, Dindi Inauguration ,rakshabandhan at Muk-Badhir Ashram,Gurupournima, Historical treks & shramdan in Gadsanvardhan, Shiv Jayanti at Campus, Campaign for Soldiers, Cloth Donation, Marathi Bhasha Divas, Human Chain, Cashless Society, Science Exhibition, Experiencing the Wari and cleanliness drive during Hadapsar to Saswad.(35Km) etc.

The Special camp marked record as 100 volunteers participation for the first time as our unit enhanced to strength of 200 this year. The activities held in the camp which includes Anand Mela & Mastershef Competition, Haladi-Kuku, Bhajan-Kirtan, Bharud, Street Plays, Awareness rallies, Lectures on Cashless India, Digital India, happy Life, Career Guidance, Gathering, Science Live Models Exhibition, Screening of Science innovation documentaries, Dramas on social issues, Baithak an interactive program discussing the great topics from historical monuments to your ideal personalities gain the attraction and appreciation of Villagers & University.

The volunteers on the occasion of Republic Day started the most remarkable initiative which was the great step that is Pune’s First Footpath School for the Children of Construction site workers, children who stays on footpath. The school has a huge response enrolling total 40 students and continued till students migrated again, hoping to have more students the Initiative was appraised by Sakal YIN Foundation.

The NSS unit is growing day by day, now having a family of almost 700 volunteers coming together for the Social Welfare, Personal Development and taking a step towards Revolution of India with the support of our Principal Sir, Programme Officers, Teaching and non-teaching staff above all the Supportive Parents of our Volunteers. The NSS Unit with many more creative & innovative ideas holding a special place in everyone’s heart.

And above all as they say your true and sincere efforts will always make a count, recently our University awarded our College NSS Unit as Best Unit in the SPPU with Special Prize and our Programme officer as Best Programme Officer which adds a silver lining to all these years.
